Shift5
Shift5, Inc. (Shift5) is a veteran-run small business with technology solutions and products to protect and defend operational technology. As an example, today's weapon systems have little to no protection against cyberattacks. The vast majority of DoD weapons systems currently rely on serial data bus protocols - such as MIL-STD-1553 - and these serial data buses are highly vulnerable to cyberattacks. Weapons systems use these redundant serial data buses to communicate critical information between embedded computers (called Electronic Control Units or ECUs). Many ECUs and current serial data bus architectures, while incredibly reliable, are not designed to provide message data authentication or encryption.
To mitigate this security vulnerability, the vast majority of other available approaches to system cyber assurance and survivability are cost prohibitive and non-adaptive to evolving threats. System operators and Commanders currently lack full situational awareness of the cyber health of their weapons systems and maintenance personnel cannot discern if anomalous behavior is a cyberattack or a true maintenance problem. Cyber Protection Teams (CPTs) lack adequate hardware or software toolkits to forensically examine the data from weapon systems because current toolkits are tailored to traditional Information Technology (IT) networks and not for serial bus data architecture found on operational technology (OT) platform.
Shift5 solutions also protect against the entire cyberattack lifecycle for critical commercial industries, such as rail, mining, maritime, and building automation systems. Our integrated software solution turns raw data into actionable insights, resulting in a safer and more efficient system. Shift5 Intake and Engine provide continuous monitoring, real-time data collection, intelligent alerting, and enables a 360 degree security view with predictive maintenance insights. Shift5 Gauge Cluster provides visualization and customized analysis of the cyber data, tailored to the specific cybersecurity needs of the user community.
